How The Town Council Works
The Town Council has 12 Town Councillors elected for a term of four years. The last full Town Council elections were held in May 2007.
The Civic Year runs from May to May with the election of the Mayor and the Deputy taking place at the Annual Statutory Meeting on the third Monday in May (except in an election year). These roles are filled by councillors who have been nominated and voted for by their councillor colleagues. The Town Councillors are unpaid, and do not receive any attendance allowance or payments for their duties, which they undertake purely on a voluntary basis. The Mayor has available a small pool of money which may be used specifically for Civic purposes.
CREWKERNE TOWN COUNCIL
The Town Council meets approximately eleven times a year and has three main committees which make decisions under their remitted powers or make recommendations for ratification by full Council. Members of the public and press are welcome to attend all the meetings.
The Amenities Committee (meets usually bi-monthly on the first Monday of the month) and makes decisions on matters pertaining to playgrounds, recreation grounds and the Council's properties (West One Youth Centre, Crewkerne Aqua and Active Lifestyle Centre, Town Hall and the War Memorial Grounds) and the Bincombe Beeches Local Nature Reserve.
The Planning and Highways Committee (usually meets on the second Monday of every month) makes recommendations on planning applications within Crewkerne to the Planning Authority (South Somerset District Council), highways issues and associated planning matters. The Committee pursues action from both the District and County Council on a range of concerns such as yellow lines, speeding traffic, highway improvements, maintenance of verges and gullies, footpaths and rights of way.
The Policy and Resources Committe (meets four times a year) makes recommendations to full Council on financial and policy matters under the discretion of the Town Council, this includes the formulation of the annual budget (precept).
